BLACK PARTY Rites XXVIII: Three DJs Bring Different Styles & Beats

The three DJs playing this year’s Black Party represent three separate musical cultures and even generations. What they share is a commitment to the kind of music that has come to define this most unique of gay dance events, which takes place March 24 and 25 at Roseland Ballroom in Midtown Manhattan.

Parisian Michael Marx made his name in local clubs like Queen, Deluxe, Mix and Butch. He has played parties like Hugo Boss’ New Year’s Eve party at the Louvre and Gay Pride Bastille, where he played for 20,000 people. He is popular on the European party circuit, including London, Ibiza and Berlin.

Steven Pevner, who helps produce the Black Party for its parent organization, the Saint at Large, recently flew to Paris to check him out. He says that Marx has immersed himself in Saint lore and the Saint sound and knows how to play this party.

He will be spinning from 10 p.m. to about 3:30 a.m. At that time, Tony Moran takes over.

Tony Moran has actually danced at the Black Party, so he understands the kind of music people want--and what they don’t want to hear.
Moran needs little introduction to anyone who has been going to parties for the past few years. In New York, he made a name for himself at Alegria, where he is in the regular DJ rotation, and on Fire Island, where he shares a house with his partner Beau Clark. Pevner says that what distringuishes Moran from other recent DJs spinning the Black Party is that he has danced at the party. He knows the music. He knows what people want and what they don’t want.

According to Pevner, Moran has been busy in the studio, where he has been mixing original production numbers, including a whole remake of a song, hiring singers and a rhythm section. Pevner says Moran treats this as one of the most important gigs of his life, and intends to blow everyone away. Of course, grizzled Black Party veterans (I count myself among them) remember similar promises from other prominent DJs, only to have them disappoint this most discerning (and critical) of crowds.

At about 10:30 a.m., the man who takes over from Moran probably understands the music of the Black Party better than anyone alive.
Michael Fierman has played more Black Parties than any other DJ. A DJ at the original Saint, he had gone into semi-retirement until recently. He will bring the party to a close sometime Sunday afternoon with the traditional Sleaze segment, following the Morning Party. Expect to hear "Hills of Katmandu" and Abba’s "The Visitors."

Speaking of sleaze, those venturing into the upstairs "Love Lounge" (more like a "Love Labyrinth") will be able to dance (or anything else their hearts and other body parts desire) to the driving, hip-hop-inspired beats of East Village favorites Rich King and Gustavo.

Annie Lennox Wields Songs Of 'Destruction'

As tipped here (BILLBOARD Magazine) in March, Annie Lennox's first studio album in four years, "Songs of Mass Destruction," will arrive in the fall. Due Oct. 2 via Arista, the set was produced by Glen Ballard, who previously told Billboard.com, "It's a very intense record. It's very personal to her. We spent a lot of time making sure the music was the way she wanted it."

Among the songs confirmed to appear on the album are "Fingernail Moon," "Dark Road" and "Sing," the latter of which was inspired by Lennox's work with Nelson Mandela's 46664 campaign to curb the spread of AIDS.

"Sing" sports contributions from 23 superstar female vocalists, including Madonna, Sarah McLachlan, Dido, Celine Dion, Faith Hill, Shakira, Bonnie Raitt, Gladys Knight, Pink, Fergie, Melissa Etheridge and KT Tunstall, among others.

The former Eurythmics vocalist's previous set, "Bare" (J Records), debuted at No. 4 on The Billboard 200 in June 2003.

Lennox has yet to confirm tour dates but will appear Aug. 15 at a special performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra at London's Mermaid Theatre.

Two years ago Mika Penniman was working as a waiter at Somerset House. This week he was back in the London entertainment venue, in a very different role. The Beirut-born glam rocker wowed audiences with a spectacular Alice In Wonderland-inspired show as part of the mansion's annual series of summer concerts.

The 23-year-old - whose new single Big Girl is out on July 23 - has drawn comparisons with late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury for his flamboyant style. And he was living up to his reputation at the show - which drew a sell-out audience, including Peaches Geldof and her boyfriend DJ Fred Les - as he took to the stage dressed as the Mad Hatter from the famous Lewis Caroll tale.

Explosions of balloons and confetti rained down on the crowd as Mika boogied his way through songs from his chart topping double platinum album Life In Cartoon Motion. And he wasn't the only one dressing up. The audience was dotted with flapper girls, fairies and cowgirls, while onstage dancers in animal suits jostled for space with the band.

The colourful performance was just the latest high spot in Mika's soaring career. Since making his radio debut in September 2006 the operatically-trained singer has topped both the singles and album charts and is currently in the middle of a run of sell-out concert dates across Europe.
